Halloween is nearly here. We’ve been thinking about how you can showcase your family bond with a range of family inspired costume ideas. Find out more.
Most famously known from the 1991 movie, The Addams family have actually been around since 1938 when they were first made into cartoons in New York. With characteristic dark clothing and a frightening manner, they are the perfect family Halloween costume. With parents Gomez and Morticia, children Wednesday and Pugsley, and even close family members Uncle Fester and Grandmama the costume can be expanded to fit as many family members as needed (including dressing up your pet as Pugsley’s pet octopus). As for what to wear, a dark suit for Gomez, a black dress for Morticia and Wednesday, and black trousers with a black and white striped top for Pugsley completes the look.
Halloween and scary monsters are a combination we know and love, but that doesn’t mean that our not-so-scary monsters need to be forgotten about. Monsters Inc. opens the door to a perfect 3-person family Halloween costume. Big, blue Sully, one-eyed Mike Wazowski, and everyone’s favourite screamer, Boo. This is one of the harder costumes to come by, but a lot of costume shops do supply it. For an added family bond to the costume, you could also try to make it yourself and get your child involved with it. Whether it be gluing together fabric or cutting string, it’s a great family activity, especially when it leads to a costume from such a beloved movie.
Cat in the hat
No list is complete without Dr. Seuss, let alone one that calls for creative outfits. Unless you fancy going trick or treating as green eggs and ham, Cat in the Hat is your best source of inspiration for a family outfit from the beloved writer. In the story, we have The Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 and 2, Sally, the boy (Conrad), the fish, and the mother (in order of how recognizable they are as characters). The cat has his famous tall red and white top hat and red bow around his neck, the Things with their red jumpsuits and numbers on the front, Sally with her white top and red bow in her hair, and the boy with his red turtleneck and black, spiky hair.
Deciding on TV’s favourite family is no easy choice, especially after already including the Addams family in the list, but we all know and love the Flintstones. The unconventional, prehistoric family is recognized all over the world for their wacky interactions, foot-powered cars, and most notably their outfits. The great thing about the Flintstones, much like with the Addams family, is that they also have an extended family so you could even get uncles, aunts, or even friends involved. With Fred’s orange cape with black dots, Wilma’s white dress and pearl necklace, Pebbles’ green dress with black dots, and even Dino and the Rubble’s, there are plenty of outfits to choose from to make it a Halloween to remember.
You don’t create one of the most successful movies in cinema history without amazing costumes, so you know you have good options with an Avengers family costume. If your child is into superheroes, then chances are they already have a favourite and will know exactly who they want to be, but even if they do not, there are so many to choose from that there is bound to be an outfit that you and your child will like. With over 15 main characters to choose from, plus countless other smaller characters, you and your children will be the superhero family everybody will envy.
Minus the Mystery Machine, Scooby-Doo and his gang have one of the easiest outfits to pull off as a large group. Known for their strong bond, each member has their own distinctive look that when put all together, is instantly recognizable. Fred’s white top and jeans, Velma’s entire orange look from sweater down to socks, Shaggy’s unkempt hair and green top, and Daphne’s purple wardrobe can all be put together using clothes you may already have or are readily available at normal clothes stores, with a Scooby outfit having to be made or bought. All that’s left is to become meddling kids and fill up on sweets.
Everyone’s favourite Italian plumber seems to be a staple Halloween costume, especially when he is joined by his group. The character, first introduced in 1983 by Nintendo, has become an internationally recognized symbol, with real-life Mario Kart being introduced in some areas of the world. Together with Luigi, Waluigi, Bowser, and Princess Peach, there are countless options to choose from to best suit your family dynamic and customise the outfit. The hardest part will be deciding who gets to don the infamous red cap!
Whilst your children may have no idea where these outfits come from, it will be a great chance to rewind time back to 1978 (and a great excuse to rewatch the movie)! For the guys in the family, jeans, a black leather jacket, and A LOT of hair gel (it is called Grease at the end of the day). Now that we have our Danny Zuko’s dressed, we can look at the outfits of the girls of Grease. Luckily, choice is abundant, from the Pink Ladies to the diner waitresses!
Wizard of Oz
Whilst Dorothy and the gang travelled to meet the Great Wizard of Oz to get her back home, our aim for walking down the road will be to have the best family outfit and get as many sweets as possible. We obviously need our Dorothy in her blue dress and ruby shoes, our Tin Man in his iconic outfit, the Scarecrow, the Wicked Witch of the West, and our Cowardly Lion to be terrified by the other monsters out and about on Halloween. All the characters have self-explanatory outfits, except for the Wicked Witch, who needs her long black dress, black pointy hat, broomstick, and green face paint to wrap up the look.
We saved arguably the best until last (definitely the one that requires the most yellow face paint). Springfield’s most chaotic family is the perfect way to, firstly, show that you are out together as a family, and secondly, highlight how close of a family you are. After all, nothing says family like painting each other bright yellow. We have Homer with his white top and blue jeans (doughnut cannot be forgotten), Marge with her characteristic high, blue hair, Bart with his orange top, blue shorts, and spiky hair, Lisa with her orange dress and pearl necklace, and last but not least, Maggie with her blue dress, blue hair bow, and red pacifier.
Whichever family outfit you decide to go with, it is a great way of showcasing your family bond, and also having a great time preparing for the night by making parts of, or the entire outfits, yourselves! It will serve as a great memory to look back on, especially if you make it a tradition and try a new outfit every year. We are sure you will look great, and happy trick-or-treating!
